The Hall Monitors Bio
Mission of The Hall Monitors: Our goal is to organize
the student season ticket holders for the 2007-2008 Indiana University men's
basketball season to unify in hopes of creating a self-governed student
section.
The Hall Monitors is the initiative to better the seating fiasco for Indiana
University students who have been allotted more seats for home basketball games
than any other Big Ten school, but have never been collectively represented nor
organized. During our inaugural season, we will provide cheer sheets for
students and coordinate with IU athletic administrators to create the best
atmosphere in college basketball. We strive to endow the student body with more
power by becoming united and coordinated through this movement which will
forever shake the walls of Assembly Hall...
As The Hall
Monitors grow stronger throughout the IU campus, we look to you, the diehard
member of Hoosier Nation, to contribute your creativity and efforts to make
Assembly Hall the home of the best student section in college basketball. With
your contributions we look to make the several improvements during the 2007-2008
Indiana men's basketball season and beyond into forthcoming seasons.

Expert Reviews
"In an era of tricked-up sound systems, luxury boxes and excessive
audiovisual bling, this is still an old-school gym. You walk in and immediately
smell the popcorn. And when the Hoosiers play well, it's really loud."-Pat
Forde, ESPN
"It is loud and passionate like Indiana fans should be. The fans in
the front row bleachers are right up on the court. There is something special
about it that I can’t put my finger on. Maybe it is the ghost of Bobby
Knight. The upper decks seem to go straight up in the air. The
chill factor is good."-Bill Kinter, CollegeHoops.net
"When you see the red and white on the floor at Assembly Hall, and then
look up in the stands that seem to go straight up on either side, you feel like
you are in a special place. The fight songs and the candy-stripe warm-up pants
are evocative of tradition and winning. McCracken and Knight won championships
on that floor, and for two straight years in the '70s, nobody but the Hoosiers
could even sniff a victory. Assembly Hall rocks when the Hoosiers roll, and the
atmosphere is pure college basketball."-Jay Bilas, ESPN
"I remember 30 something years ago, and it seems as though the place
hasn't changed. When Indiana went ahead, it was about as loud as any place
outside of Cameron [Indoor Arena] that I have been in." -Mike
Kryzyzewski, Duke Coach
“Crowds Help Win Games” -Terry Hoeppner
Tradition
You can smell it as soon as you step foot into Assembly Hall and see the
history of Indiana Basketball unfold when standing in front of the wood court
overshadowed by cream and crimson stripes. Coach Kelvin Sampson rightfully
referred to it as the "Mecca of Basketball" upon his inauguration as
head coach. While the team has earned its fair share of recognition in record
books to establish a tradition which will not soon die...students find
themselves at a crossroad. Individually we wish to contribute to the team by
being loyal fans but collectively there is no institution or system which
enables us to come together in one voice.
"Five
fingers alone can only deliver an insignificant slap...but when those fingers
come together to become a fist, it will always deliver a devastating
blow."
-John Wooden, Hoosier native
This philosophy referring to the magnitude of the collective group
will become the ideal model of the Indiana student section will become. Besides the singing the
fight songs, singing along with the band, a "DE-FENSE" chant every
now and then, the ritual call for the elderly to actually stand up during a
free throw to remind them that they are at a basketball game. Oh yea...and quite
possibly the greatest TV timeout in college basketball history with the
ultimate collaborate of William Tell, flags bombarding the opposing team, and
"Indiana, Our Indiana" to cap things off. But not else much sets us
apart from the student section at "Insert Generic College Here". In
order for the self-governed student section to be successful, three objectives
must be met: Innovation, Coordination, and Persistence.

I know there are some pretty dedicated Hoosier fans out there, so award yourself 1000 bonus points if you knew this already...
This is the list of career scoring leaders for IU:
- Calbert Cheaney
- Steve Alford
- Don Schlundt
- A.J. Guyton
- Mike Woodson
- Alan Henderson
- Damon Bailey
- Kent Benson
- Eric Anderson
- Brian Evans
- Scott May
- Greg Graham
Do any of these names surprise you? One of them shocked the hell out of me, and it’s all part of what I call “The Strange Case of Old Man Anderson.”
I have had this discussion a number of times, but Eric Anderson lives in a strange place in my IU memory. In my mind, he was there forever. Upon much reflection, I think the reason it seems he was there for so long is that he bridged two eras. He played with Joe Hillman and Alan Henderson.
The fact that he is number nine on the all-time scoring list is amazing to me. Just look at who he played... [Read More]

Lynch: "Our guys are anxious and ready"

It's been a rough year for IU football. Fortunately, their game Saturday is a relatively even match-up against the Boilermakers.
The teams will be fighting not only for their dignity on the field, but to avoid ending up at the bottom of the conference.
Coach Bill Lynch spoke to the media Tuesday for his weekly press conference and touched largely on the state of the team going into the storied Old Oaken Bucket game. Here's what he had to say:
On the importance of Saturday’s game:
"It's bucket week and I mean that sincerely starting when we got back on Monday. I know our guys are anxious and ready. Any time you have a rivalry game like... [Read More]

Here are my thoughts about the IUPUI game in no particular order:
There is a difference between this team and last year's team that is nothing short of phenomenal. Last year, we won almost all of our games on the strength of our talent alone. We were just more athletic, faster, better shooters, etc. than most of our opponents. We never figured out how to play to our potential as a team because we relied on our ability more than each other.
This year, every win we get, every improvement we make will be because we earned it. This team works hard. Four games in (counting the mezzanine) we are already more of a team than last year's group of guys ever became. For us to win, these guys are going to need to rely on each other and just flat out work their opponents.
I was so excited by... [Read More]

Who's got the edge in the Bucket Game?

3-8. 3-8. The records mirror each other. The teams have had similar seasons.
Indiana has had a year of disappointment following a year that inspired hope into many non-believers. 2008, a season where the Hoosiers were among the laughing stock of the country in NCAA football.
Indiana football has never before lost to a Mid American Conference team. This year, they lost to two of them in Ball State and Central Michigan University. They also put up abysmal numbers in the second half in just about every game this year.
The Boilermakers, on the other hand, have not been great themselves, posting the same 3-8 record as the Hoosiers. Purdue, has had a much more difficult schedule and has lost to teams that a bottom half Big Ten team should lose to. These teams include Oregon, Notre... [Read More]

Indiana vs. Purdue – One Year Later

Never has one sporting event been so fresh in my mind one year later, while at the same time seem like it happened decades ago.
My ability to recount the events of November 17, 2007 is so easy because of the sheer joy myself and many others experienced that evening.
There were the emotions, as the Hoosiers fulfilled Coach Hep’s vision by securing their spot to “Play 13”. There was the adrenaline, fueled by Austin Starr’s game-winning field goal and rushing the field. And, of course, there was the added benefit of knocking off the Boilers for the first time since 2001.
All of these factors combined lead me to believe that, unless Tom Crean can bring banner number 6 to Assembly Hall, the 2007 Bucket Game will be my favorite and most... [Read More]
