I had a nightmare last night--that New England won the Super Bowl. I was angry enough that the Patriots, who finished the season undefeated, have been dubbed the "best team in NFL history," but winning the Super Bowl? That would justify comments like that. But when I awoke, drenched in sweat, I realized that such a thing won't happen. My man Manning won't let it happen. That is, if New England can get past Jacksonville today.
The Jaguars finished the year with a respectable 11-5 record, but they were an impressive 10-3 with starting quarterback David Garrard at the helm. They also feature perhaps the NFL's top backfield (sorry LT). With the tandem of veteran pounder Fred Taylor and second-year bowling ball Maurice Jones-Drew, the Jags are having a great year while proving that they can run over jsut about anyone. Seeing that New England has allowed huge rushing games to so many recently (Willis McGahee, Brian Westbrook to name a few), the Jags could have a huge game.
But, if the Patriots get lucky yet again and pull off the victory (like they did at least four times this season), then barring a San Diego win Sunday, they will have to face the Indianapolis Colts. As a Colts fan, I can only say one thing: bring it on Brady. Peyton will not let our team lose in the playoffs this year.
It's been a long year for Indy, losing Dwight Freeney and being without Marvin Harrison for most of the season. But Peyton has found a way to win and (knock on wood) will find a way to do it again. People seem to have forgotten that (1) our loss to San Diego was a fluke. We lost by two when Peyton threw six, yes SIX, interceptions and only lost because Adam (normally automatic) Vinatieri missed two short field goals. People also seem to forget that (2) New England's win over Indy was also a fluke. We had a nice lead, but caved at the end. Don't forget, though, that we were without Marv, without Anthony Gonzalez.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to overlook tomorrow's game against the Chargers. LT can catch fire against anyone (and has done so recently). But things will be easier now that Antonio Gates is out. I believe that the Colts will win tomorrow and may face the Patriots in the AFC Championship. But really, I can't wait. It may take until then to make my nightmares stop. Let's not look too far ahead though--don't sleep on San Diego. Go Colts!
