Every nation has its front-running issues. These are the topics that spiral into heated debate amongst citizens and, when brought up by politicians, have the weight to sway someone’s decision one way or the other. For some political states, these issues dive into the dynamics of gang violence, teen-pregnancy and fair taxation. For others with close to no critical domestic concerns, the debate rests on safety in the kitchen. I’m talking about Canada.
The Canadians have a government agency known as the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) that has resorted to scare tactics to keep Canadian workers from injuring themselves on the job. Apparently there have been one-too-many grease fires and ladder collapses lately.
The WSIB's recent campaign has critics talking, with all of its commercials depicting gruesome accidents happening in the middle of everyday workplaces. Cute-girl-working-at-the-Gap-hanging-signs-from-a-tall-ladder beware, your ladder could collapse, causing you to plummet head-first into a glass display case. Ouch.
No worries, because as Americans, we can focus on terrorism and gay marriage, thereby avoiding any workplace threats. These commercials are certainly entertaining, but don’t affect us a bit. Sidenote: have you ever tried typing up articles in the bathtub? It’s pretty relaxing.
