It’s that time of year again Hoosiers. Jack-o-lanterns are being smashed by drunken passersby, Oktoberfest beer is all the rage, and you can’t drive down a street at night without seeing the some girl’s butt cheeks hanging out of her slutty costume. Ahh, Halloween, my favorite non-religious holiday of the year. A friend of mine described Halloween pretty well when she said, “Halloween is the time of year when girls dress like sluts and guys dress like girls.” But what is there to do when the madness has passed, when you’re drunk and have nothing to do, when the cops have shut down every party on campus? What a scary movie with your friends, duh. Here are my top 5 (click on the titles for previews):
1)
The Shining: A man, his son and wife become the winter caretakers of an isolated hotel where Danny, the son, sees disturbing visions of the hotel's past using a telepathic gift known as "The Shining." The father, Jack, is working diligently on a writing project when he slowly starts to go insane as a result of cabin fever and seeing the ghosts of the hotel’s former guests. After being convinced by a waiter's ghost to "correct" the family, Jack goes completely insane. The only thing that can save Danny and his mother is "The Shining."
2)
Psycho: This Alfred Hitchcock movie is a classic. In it, Phoenix office worker Marion Crane is fed up with the way life has treated her. Her romantic relationship is unsuccessful so one Friday, when she is trusted to bank $40,000 from her employer, Marion sees the opportunity to take the money and start a new life. Marion leaves town and heads towards California. Tired after the long drive and caught in a storm, she gets off the main highway and pulls into The Bates Motel. The motel is managed by a quiet young man called Norman who seems to be dominated by his mother. It is at the motel that crazy things start to happen.
3)
The Exorcist: What scary movie list would be complete without The Exorcist? In it, a visiting actress in Washington, D.C., notices dramatic and dangerous changes in the behavior and physical make-up of her 12-year-old daughter. Meanwhile, a young priest at nearby Georgetown University begins to doubt his faith while dealing with his mother's terminal sickness while a frail, elderly priest recognizes the necessity for a show-down with an old demonic enemy. This movie has some of the creepiest scenes ever shown.
4)
The Descent: Sure, this one is a lot more recent than the others, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t scary. After a tragic accident, six friends reunite for a caving expedition. Their adventure soon goes horribly wrong when a collapse traps them deep underground and they find themselves pursued by bloodthirsty creatures. As their friendships deteriorate, they find themselves in a desperate struggle to survive the creatures and each other. Originally released in Britain, the American release features a different ending.
5)
The Omen (2006): This is another recent release, a remake of the classic from 1976. This movie follows the life of a young boy deemed as the Antichrist. Damien is the embodiment of evil and can’t be stopped. He may be the creepiest looking kid I’ve ever seen. Plus, you’ve got to give the marketing team credit—the film was released on 6/6/2006.
