An
IU Beer Pong League? I know it may sound too good to be true, but this year, Kyle Waldie, a third-year law student here at IU, set out to create one of the most extensive and well-organized beer pong leagues this campus has ever seen. If there was ever going to be intramural beer pong here at IU, this is about as close as it gets.
Comprised of
24 teams competing for a $240 first prize, this dedicated group of beer pong players has been narrowed down to
only four teams,
with the championship game scheduled for Friday, May 2nd, at the Jungle Room.
Straight from the Commish, here’s the low-down on this remarkable idea:
Caleb Maxson: When was the IU Beer Pong League created?
Kyle Waldie: The IU Beer Pong League was created out of a mix of different circumstances. Over my 3 years of law school, my friends and I have held many different beer pong tournaments that only lasted a day, or an evening. It had boiled down to the point where we were playing 4-8 team tournaments every night before we'd head out to the bars. It was after one of these nights early in January that the idea of a beer pong league was created.
CM: What sets this league apart from other beer pong tournaments on campus?
KW: This league is set apart from the rest of the random beer pong tournaments on campus by the very fact that we had a regular season. There were 24 teams, broken up into six divisions of four teams each. Over a nine-week period (including a week hiatus for Spring Break),
each team played 16 regular season games, eight home, and eight away. Once the regular season ended, the top seven teams from each league made the playoffs. The first 2 rounds of the playoffs have finished, so we are now down to the semi-finals. The Finals are scheduled for Friday, May 2nd at 10:30pm, hosted by
Jungle Room.
CM: What kind of participants did you look to get involved?
KW: Simply because of the hastiness of creating this league, out of the 48 competitors, 47 of them were law students. One was a grad student, who I'm friends with. I knew a few undergrads that liked the idea, but decided not to participate in the end. Really, the participants that we were looking for was anyone who liked playing beer pong in general. As long as they were 21, all were welcome.
CM: Do you think this will turn into an annual event, and if so do you have plans for improving or expanding upon the league?
KW: I'm unsure if this will turn into an annual event. I graduate on May 3rd, and am moving to Boston this summer, so I think it's still up in the air as to whether this continues next year. Although, from everyone that participated this year, I've had nothing but glowing reviews. Everyone had a great time, and there have been rumblings about this continuing into next year.
CM: Any predictions for the champion this year?
KW: I can't comment about who's going to be the champion, since I'm on one of the final four teams.
