Despite poor weather, IU's biggest party weekend lived up to its reputation. The Indiana State Excise Police have the citations to prove it.
The law enforcement division issued 202 citations over the weekend, nearly double the 103 citations issued during 2007’s Little 500 weekend. Most of the summonses were alcohol-related.
A fun weekend turned into an expensive weekend for many Little 500 goers this weekend.
The IEP detailed the summonses in a news release.
Of the offenses, 122 were for illegal possession, consumption, or transportation of alcoholic beverages. The state continued its crack down on fake IDs, busting 31 people for possession or attempting to use a fake ID.
The police also reminded citizens that turning 21 doesn’t make you exempt from the law; 18 adults were summonsed for furnishing alcohol to minors.
Despite the high numbers of alcohol-related incidents, only 12 of the summonses were for traffic violations and just one was for operating while under the influence. Only two people were arrested by the Excise Police for public intoxication.
Here is a breakdown of the other offenses:
- Nine arrested for drug-related offenses
- Three arrested for theft
- Three arrested for resisting law enforcement
- Three additional charges for a variety of offenses.
The Herald Times reported Monday that about 270 people went to court Sunday morning following legal problems at Little 500, the majority of whom participated in a pretrial diversion program. The program costs $420, but leaves offenders with a clean record afterwards.
Besides the fee, they are require to do about three hours of road clean-up work and attend an alcohol education class in the space of about 12 hours.
