Normally being in a fraternity brings only benefits during Little 500 week. That is, unless passing your classes is your main goal. You get access to the biggest parties, best concerts, and the hottest girls. This year, however, being in a frat hasn’t been all it’s cracked up to be for some brothers. With the
utter disaster that was the DMX concert and the recent expulsion of 30 members from Kappa Sigma, this week turned in the wrong direction for some unfortunate Greeks.
Is that DMX?! Nope, it's a security guard. And he has mace.
The DMX concert was the most-marketed and hyped show scheduled for this week. Lucky members of Lambda Chi Alpha and Delta Upsilon got the opportunity to sit outside Ballantine for hours at a time, hawking a washed-up rapper to students who casually ignored their obnoxious sales pitch by turning their IPods all the way up (were they listening to DMX? Most likely not).
What did ticket holders get in return? A spray of mace to the dome, no DMX, a ton of IUPD, and countless drunk and pissed off concert-goers.
What I don’t understand is why people had any expectations at all for the concert. DMX was set to bring hits like “Ruff Ryders Anthem,” and “Party Up,” singles released in 1998 and 2000, which was almost a decade ago. Not only has he not produced a memorable single in almost as long, he has an extensive history of being late to shows or not showing up at all.
Clearly the numerous precautions that Lambda Chi Alpha said they had in place to ensure DMX’s performance were nothing but empty lies, and apparently they hadn’t talked to the rapper about what would and wouldn’t fly with the cops before he arrived. His reported offering alcohol to the crowd was probably one of those things that wouldn’t.
Tickets to Little 500 concerts at fraternities are traditionally fairly cheap, but if the fraternities don’t reverse this trend soon, they won’t be able to get rid of tickets for much more than a few Keystone Lights in return next year. With the disorganization of fraternity concerts and the lack of means to control the raucous crowds, it’s no surprise that no legitimate (and intelligent) artist with a bright future would choose to come here.
Adding to the problems is the booting of 30 members from Kappa Sigma for unspecified reasons. With the expulsion of Alpha Epsilon Pi still fresh in the minds of many, this newest incident does nothing to help the image of the Greek life.
Were the members caught filming of the sequel to “Campus Invasion,” the notorious adult film that took place in Teter? Did they get caught providing drugs or alcohol to other students? Did they submit their pledges to cruel and unusual hazing (perhaps by forcing them to go to the DMX concert…)?
Whatever the issue was, it’s obvious that some fraternities on campus need to get their acts together, because neither fellow students nor the university are likely to put up with these unnecessary problems for long.
