Barack Obama may—or may not—be visiting Bloomington Friday. Two local papers, The Indiana Daily Student and The Herald Times had conflicting reports about the potential visit.
The IDS reported today that Obama was going to make a stop in B-Town Friday, but the Herald Times tonight reported that there was no Monroe County stop scheduled for the Democratic presidential candidate.
It's still up in the air--Obama may or may not visit Bloomington on Friday.
Apparently, rumors started after members of the Secret Service met with local law officials on Tuesday. IU Police Department Capt. Jerry Minger, who said the the U.S. Secret Service met with their department Tuesday and said that Obama would be visiting Bloomington.
The Herald Times, however, spoke to Obama spokesperson Gennet Tseggai, who said, “As of now, there are no scheduled stops in Bloomington.”
Obama is currently scheduled to make stops in Terre Haute and Columbus, Ind. already on Friday.
Former president Bill Clinton visited IU on behalf of his wife Hillary last week. If Obama decided to come, he would be the first candidate from the 2008 presidential election to visit IU’s campus.
Still, IU has become a heated site for debate. Besides former president Clinton, celebrities such as actors Kal Penn and Jeremy Piven have visited Indiana’s campus to stump for Senator Obama.
IU has become a heated contest of late because of the close race for the Democratic nomination. While Indiana’s primaries normally are insignificant, this year, the May 6 date puts a spotlight on the state and its 84 delegates, one of the biggest numbers besides from the state of Pennsylvania.
