Don't get me wrong, I'm still young when it comes to Little 5 experience. I'm only a sophomore, but I've already learned some valuable lessons regarding the biggest weekend in IU's school year. Little 500 Week officially starts today, but for those out there who haven't yet experienced it, I thought it would be nice to give you some pointers, so here goes.
Yes, Little 5 is one big party, but it's better to know some things about it ahead of time.
(1) School life still goes on during Little 5 Week
Everyone has at least one of those friends who talks about how drunk they get every night of Little 5 Week. It's impossible to avoid knowing one of those kids. But one thing that kid doesn’t tell you? He’s going to be sticking around IU at least 5 years to finish his undergraduate degree.
Okay, maybe that’s not entirely true. Some people do actually luck out and get a “bye” week when it comes to school work. But most professors know exactly when Little 500 week is and plan accordingly—this means that tests, pop quizzes, papers and attendance points will all be given out during this week. Get used to it.
(2) Little 500 is more than just one big party
Yes, there will be plenty of parties this week. But you should know that Little 5 is actually a sporting event too. Yeah, it’s a bike race with a long history.
The event was started in 1951 and was documented in the film Breaking Away. I only point this out because I actually met someone last year who had no idea the race even existed. If you haven’t been to a race yet, you should go. It’s definitely an experience.
This year, the women’s race is on April 11 and the men’s on April 12.
(3) If you’re ridiculous, you will probably get a ticket
Bloomington brings in so many excise cops for Little 5, it’s almost ridiculous. During tailgating earlier this year, the IUPD issued
more than 200 citations for underage drinking and public intoxication. Expect that number to triple this weekend.
(4) Finals are just around the corner
Not to sound to parent-like, but finals aren't far away. Plan ahead to be up late Sunday night doing the work you didn't do all week. All-nighters are common.
Once you realize that you won't sleep again until the end of the semester, then you're ready for a successful Little 5!
