The Indiana University baseball team has quietly started their season. That doesn’t mean that the Hoosiers haven’t been making some noise, though. Overshadowed by the end run of basketball season, the IU baseball team kicked off the season on Feb. 22 and has since gone 2-3.
Matt Bashore has been outstanding for the Hoosiers so far this season.
IU lost its first two games of the season to LSU, a perennial powerhouse in NCAA baseball and a team that is ranked No. 34 this season. The Hoosiers did, however, upsets the Tigers in their third game of the season. The 7-6 win is easily the highlight of the season for IU this year. In that game, Indiana’s offense exploded for 14 hits and was led by the pitching duo of Kyle Leiendecker and Doug Fleenor. With their help and a three hit performance from Evan Crawford, the Hoosiers were able to come from behind.
This weekend, Indiana traveled to Clarksville, Tenn. to participate in the Austin Peay Invitational. The team lost their first game 12-5 to Illinois State on Friday. Yesterday, however, behind the outstanding six innings of pitching by sophomore Matt Bashore and three hits by Andrew Means, the Hoosiers beat Austin Peay State 9-1. Bashore allowed just four hits, lowering his season ERA to 0.83.
The Hoosiers’ final game in the invitational is today against Valparaiso.
Coming up, IU will participate in the Pepsi Johnny Quik Tournament in Freso, Calif. The Big Ten regular season kicks off on March 28 against Minnesota.
