It took courage. Strength. Endurance. But after weeks of intense battle, there is but one
Hoosier Hottie remaining. Last week’s final matchup between Devin Wirts and Jenni Schwartz was fierce. But in the end, only six votes separated the two girls, and Wirts emerged the champion.
Devin Wirts will receive a $500 gift certificate to Malibu Grill, Bloominton’s premiere wine-and-dine venue. If you voted for her and played a part in her ultimate success, you’d better make sure you’re on the guest list for that dinner!
If you’d like to play a part in the next Hoosier Hottie contest, be sure to
submit your info (or your unknowing friend’s!). Below, I’ve posted a short conversation with the lovely
Devin Wirts.
From surviving a year in “Herpes Hall” to teaching 350 kids how to swim, sophomore Devin Wirts has nearly been through it all.
DB: You're a sophomore, so what's difference between Freshman Devin Wirts and Sophomore Devin Wirts?
DW: Freshman Devin lived on the best floor ever which got the nickname Herpes Hall...which sounds horrible, but really isn't.
DB: Hmm, from what I’ve heard, herpes is usually pretty horrible.
DW: Well, the nickname came from a girl on our floor after a conversation about how most of us were going to go out for the night and maybe there would be guys there and so on—you know how girls are—and she said “don't get herpes.” So the hall got dubbed Herpes Hall but I can assure you...no one on the hall had herpes or anything nasty like that. It was the best year of my life and I miss living with all the girls on my hall—they seriously made it amazing!
DB: And the Sophomore Devin?
DW: The Freshman Devin wasn't very focused on their school work as most freshmen aren't. As a sophomore, I've realized that it’s important to go to class and do the best that you possible can. I think it takes getting over that first year to realize that college isn't like High School and your professors my not know you on a personal level and you really have to work for your grade.
DB: What's your major?
DW: My major is Environmental Management. I'm involved in INPURG. I’m a huge environmentalist! I don't really think that people realize how important it is to conserve and protect out environment because it won't always be like this. And you don't have to be an all out tree hugger to make a difference... just recycle! I’m also getting a certificate in business.
DB: Okay, okay, I’m recycling, I promise! What activities are you involved in other than INPURG?
DW: I’m a part of the Student Alumni Association. I love IU basketball, and I think anyone who comes from my hometown of Washington, Indiana has to love basketball! It’s just a way of life.
DB: The SAA’s great for connections. But what else?
DW: Well, like most girls, I love to shop! I also love to play tennis when I get the chance…I played in high school. But my passion is swimming and teaching swim lessons. I’m a certified YMCA lifeguard, and I lifeguard for the YMCA in Washington, Indiana. There is nothing better than showing a child how to swim and seeing the progress that they make. It's great! I've taught nearly 350 kids how to swim.
DB: Holy cow! That’s a lot of swimming. I need to go to the gym sometime this year to see what’s new. Anyhow, what's your love life looking like? This one’s for all those interested swimmers…
DW: I’m taken. I've been with my boyfriend, Jordan, for almost 4½ years. He is really a great guy! But I haven't always thought of him that way.
DB: Uh oh, here it comes…how did you used to think of him?
DW: Actually from middle school through our freshman year in high school I hated him! He was seriously someone I could not stand. But because we were stuck beside each other alphabetically, I was forced to deal with him. It's funny how things work out. Now, we have an apartment together off campus and everything is going great!
DB: Stupid alphabet. How tall are you? How tall was the tallest guy you’ve ever dated?
DW: I'm pretty average height 5'5''. But I've always liked guys to be taller than me. It gives me a reason to wear heels—I guess that’s another interest of mine. I love shoes. I work at Payless Shoes. So I’m surrounded by cute shoes all the time! The tallest guy I've dated was 6’1” which was perfect he's not too tall and not too short.
DB: Do you drink? If so, what would I make you if I was a sexy bartender who makes great drinks?
DW: I actually don't drink which I guess you could say is rare for IU. But I still go out and have a great time.
DB: Good for you. Let's say that, hypothetically, the winner of the upcoming Hoosier Hottie contest gets $15,000 to be spent within Bloomington in one day. That’s really, really hypothetically. Where and how would you spend the loot?
DW: That would be unreal!
DB: That’s because it would be unreal! That’s way too much money to ever give a girl to go shopping.
DW: Haha, well I guess my first stop would be for new clothes at all my favorite stores in B-town: Abercrombie, Hollister, Charlotte Russe, Payless, Dicks. But I do have an obsession with bags so I would have to make a stop by T.J. Maxx before I would take all of my girls from the Hoosier Hotties and the rest of my friends out to dinner somewhere.
DB: What’s your reaction to being selected as a Hoosier Hottie?
DW: It's really a shock to be a Hoosier Hottie. I’m very flattered.
