Former IU men’s soccer coaching legend Jerry Yeagley will be inducted into the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Hall of Fame the association announced today. After a stellar forty-year career at the helm as the Hoosiers’ head coach, Yeagley will join Paul “Sandy” Sanderson as the 43rd and 44th members inducted into the Hall.
Yeagley began coaching at Indiana University at 1963, when he took over as the head of the men’s club team. After going 78-25-7 in his first ten years, the NCAA elevated the team to the varsity level. Soon, the program became the most dominant force in college soccer history. Yeagley spent 31 years as the Hoosiers’ head coach, going 544-101-45, making 28 NCAA tournaments including six national titles. His teams also won 10 of the first 13 Big Ten conference titles.
Yeagley seemed very proud to have received the recognition. “I am thrilled and deeply honored to receive this award,” Yeagley told IUHoosiers.com. “This is an award shared with every player who has worn an IU uniform and every coach who has assisted me over the years. This award belongs to Indiana University and the soccer family. I am proud to have been a caretaker of the program.”
This, of course, is not the first recognition that Yeagley has received. Before retirement in 2003, the NSCAA named him Coach of the Year six times. He was also selected as the Big Ten Coach of the Year eight times. Both totals are records. Yeagley has been a mentor and coach to many great players, including 49 All-America selections, 65 professionals, and 20 who have played for the U.S. National Team.
The ceremony for the induction will take place at the Marriot Waterfront Hotel in Baltimore, Md., on Friday, Jan. 18, 2008. To get more information visit the
