Player Profile: WR Jamonne Chester is a 2009 IU target

IU is set to bring in http://iuplanet.com/forum/indiana-fo...iu-target.htmlfive new wide receiver prospects for the 2008 season, but Coach Bill Lynch and the Hoosiers coaching staff are still working to bring in more wide receivers for 2009 in an effort to add depth and possibly shift a player or two to new positions (i.e. DB).

One of their main targets for 2009 is Jamonne Chester out of Covenant High School in Redford, Michigan:

Jamonne Chester

Position: Wide receiver

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 195 lbs

Hometown: Redford, Michigan

Rivals.com Rankings: 3 stars

Interested Schools: Indiana, Central Michigan, Toledo, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Michigan, Ball State, Michigan State

Additional Information: Chester received scholarship from IU around March or April of this year. He has recently been looking into Indiana, Michigan, Central Michigan, and Toledo, and already has offers from Indiana, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Toledo, and Ball State.

Chester took a visit to IU earlier this year and had positive impressions from his initial visit, although he said he didn’t get to see much of campus. “It was good, I liked the coaches, and I got to meet a lot of the players,” he said. IU assistant coach George Ricumstrict has been Chester’s main recruiter so far.

When asked about his talents on the field, Chester kept it simple. He described his strengths as “not taking plays off, just coming down with the ball, and running crisp routes.” He also said that he runs in a very respectable 4.5 second 40-yard dash.

He mentioned one definite priority for him when it came to selecting a school. “Education, first and foremost,” he stated. He also noted, “I like where I can come and play, and show my skills right away. The coaches, how they get along with the players,” and then reiterated that education came first.

This desire for a great education would normally make IU a good choice, but it could be a potential downfall. Chester mentioned that he was “thinking about engineering” as a possible major, which would of course would put Indiana out of the picture. Fortunately, he is not sure of what he wants to study.

This past season Chester helped lead Covenant to the regional finals by hauling in 35 catches for nearly 700 yards. This year he is aiming at making it all the way to a state championship victory. Before then however, he plans on coming back to Bloomington for an official visit and to take a closer look at campus. He wants to make his final college decision before the football season starts in the fall.

Analysis: The coaching staff seems to be loading up on wide receivers, but the more the better. You never know which of the players are going to pan out and which ones will never reach their potential. Chester seems like a very solid prospect, and although he isn't one of the more highly-touted receivers, he could see his stock rise even higher.

At 6’2” and 195 lbs, he’s a fairly big receiver but still has good speed. He is also known to have great hands as well, and knowing how to focus on running crisp routes is also extremely important. The number of new incoming receivers to compete with for playing time may end up taking IU out of the running for Chester, but if he decides to commit here he would be a great pickup for the Hoosiers.

I don't feel like we really need any more receivers, he may have trouble moving up the depth chart if he comes here.

Yea, it definitely sounds like he might go elsewhere for more playing time, but another good receiver would never hurt! You never know who might step up to a leading role.
