A look at Crean’s coaching staff: Seltzer, Buckley, Grossman, and Barone

With the additions of four former Marquette coaches to the IU program, Coach Tom Crean nearly has his staff complete. All of his four most hires followed him from Marquette, and all of them have impressive credentials. As Crean's right-hand guys, this staff will be critical in the success of IU basketball.

Although he is still reportedly looking for a third assistant to have on the bench, here’s a quick look at the four people he’s brought on board so far:

Name: Bennie Seltzer

Age: 37

Hometown: Birmingham, Alabama

Position at IU: Assistant Coach

Hiring Date: April 17

Coaching History: Coached under Kelvin Sampson at Oklahoma from 1997-2006. Coached under Tom Crean at Marquette from 2006-2008.

Accomplishments: Helped coach the Sooners to eight NCAA tournaments, including trips to the Sweet 16, Elite Eight, and Final Four. This past season Marquette reached the second round and finished with a 25-10 record

Strength: Player development. He helped coach players for the 2004 USA World Championship for Young Men Qualifying Team (one of four court coaches).

Other facts: Seltzer holds the school record for career assists as Washington State University, and was an all-conference selection in the Pac-10 his senior year in 1992-1993. He is married with two sons.

Name: Tim Buckley

Age: 44

Hometown: Aurora, Illinois

Position at IU: Assistant Coach

Hiring Date: April 17

Coaching History: Assistant coach at his alma mater, Bemidji State, from 1986-1988. Assistant coach at Rockford College for one year and then head coach for four years from 1988-1993. Coached under Stu Jackson at Wisconsin in 1993-1994. Went 88-55 as an assistant coach at Ball State from 1994-1999. Spent one year at Marquette before returning to Ball State as head coach until 2006, where he went 143-139. He then went to Iowa to coach under Steve Alford for a year. After Alford left the program, Buckley was hired at Marquette in 2007.

Accomplishments: In the 2001-2002 season, led the Cardinals to wins over No. 3 Kansas and No. 4 UCLA. Was the fastest coach to 50 victories in Rockford College’s history. Was a member of the Executive Committee for the MAC, and a regional committee for the NCAA.

Strength: Recruiting. Buckley has a myriad of recruiting connections here in the Midwest thanks to his extensive head coaching experience here.

Other facts: Has a bachelor’s degree in communications and a master’s degree in physical education. He is married and has one daughter.

Name: Jayd Grossman

Age: 38 or 39

Hometown: Evansville, Wisconsin

Position at IU: Assistant Athletic Director-Basketball Administration

Hiring Date: April 29

Coaching History: Was named a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of Virginia from 1992-1993. Served as athletic trainer for the University of Cincinnati for 10 years from 1993-2003. Served as head athletic trainer for four years at Marquette from 2003-2007. In 2007 his responsibilities were expanded and he was named the Coordinator of Student-Athlete performance.

Accomplishments: Worked at the USA Basketball National Team Trials in 2000 and 2001. He was the athletic trainer for the Under-21 team, which won the gold medal, in 2001.

Strength: Athletic training.

Other facts: Has a bachelor’s degree in athletic training and a master’s degree in education. He is married and has two daughters.

Name: Brian Barone

Age: 30

Hometown: College Station, Texas

Position at IU: Operations and video

Hiring Date: April 29

Coaching History: Was an assistant coach under Porter Moser at Illinois State University for four years before being hired by Marquette last season

Accomplishments: He received honorable mention for all-conference teams as a sophomore at Texas A&M. Was team captain for Marquette’s basketball team for his final two collegiate years under Tom Crean.

Strength: Basketball operations

Other facts: Has a master’s degree in communications. He is married.

Looks like Crean's got some great help, especially with Buckley and Seltzer. They've both been crucial in landing recruits for next year.

Brian Barone's job sounds awesome. Watching games, doing office stuff, and editing video? I'd do that for a living any day.

Sampson had an armada of assistant coaches, and i think that, (along with some violations), really helped him with recruiting... Maybe CTC could add one or two?

Apparently it's kind of hard to control "an armada of assistant coaches," especially when you can't control yourself. :P. I'm pretty sure that Crean is still trying to hire one more, am I wrong?

Okay, true enough, but I would consider Crean more of a character guy than Kelvin, and undoubtedly his assistants would be as well. And yes I have heard he plans on hiring another. It just seems to me that our staff is very strong in the midwest, but if we added a coach with knowledge and roots in other areas of the country, that would certainly help our search for quality players.
