IUplanet caught up with
Verdell Jones, Indiana’s most recent 2008 commitment, for a brief conversation at the
Adidas May Classic on Saturday. Jones, a 6’4”, 160 lb point guard out of Champaign Central (Ill.) was in attendance at Assembly Hall to watch some of the AAU action that was taking place on the court. Here’s what he had to say about the upcoming season at IU.
"We’re going to surprise a lot of people this year"
How’s it feel to have your decision made?
It’s relaxing. I mean, I miss AAU and stuff like that, but I’m just happy to take another step in life.
What are your thoughts on Crean, what did he say that you really liked?
He’s full of energy, he’s really energetic. I think he has big plans, and I just want to be part of his plans. I think we’re going to get Indiana turned around quick.
You think it’s going to happen?
Oh definitely, from the different players he’s bringing in, and the mentality we’re going to have when we come here, I think it’s going to change quick.
Do you know any of the incoming recruits?
I know a few, I played with Nick Williams in my high school career. I played against Matt Roth in state, so I know a few of them.
Can you describe your game a little bit?
I’m a big guard, I’m smooth, I can shoot it, and I’m really good closing and with the dribble.
What are you going to be working on this summer?
Just putting on weight, I’m real thin, just putting on weight and trying to get some muscle and strength.
What do you think about campus?
Oh it’s real nice. I took an unofficial a few weeks ago down here, and I like it a lot.
Any idea of what you might study?
Probably something in business, because it’s known for its business school, and I’ve always been interested in business. So it’ll probably be international business or something like that.
What are you most excited about coming to IU?
Just rebuilding the tradition. A lot of people aren’t having expectations for us, so I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people this year.
Where do you see this program in four years?
Final Fours.
National Championships?
Yep.
