Adidas May Classic: Jordan Hulls talks about his IU offer, possible options

Jordan Hulls, a 6'0", 170 lb point guard out of Bloomington South high school, recently jumped onto the radar of several major Division I schools despite remaining relatively unknown for much of his high school career. Hulls has been a huge factor on a thriving Indiana Elite One team that is among the best AAU squads in the nation.

Hulls received an offer from Purdue the day after IU's

Hulls recently received offers from both IU and Purdue, and has attracted the attention of Duke, Stanford, and Wake Forest. Here's what he had to say about his future: It sounds like it may come down to another old-fashioned recruiting battle between Indiana and Purdue.

On his recent offer from IU:

I was told to come in that night, so I called [Coach Crean] and we started talking. He actually offered me on the phone and then he was like actually I just want to do it at center court. So then he had me come over, and to see how it looks like was really neat.

On the experience in Assembly Hall:

It was fully lit, like it is right now. All the coaching staff was out there, and it was just crazy.

On playing in Assembly Hall after the offer:

Well it’s huge, I’ve grown up here, I’ve been here a lot before, but playing on the court is really neat, and getting the feel for it, and stuff like that. So, no words can really explain it right now.

On his teammates’ reactions to his offers:

They’re very supportive of me, they’ve had my back for all these years and stuff, it’s just great to be on a team like that.

On going to Purdue after the offer:

Yea, I went to Purdue the next day, actually. Then I talked to Coach Painter, I had a good meeting with him , and he offered me a scholarship as well.

On his other opportunities:

It’s just IU and Purdue right now. I have other offers from like Vermont and Toledo, but IU and Purdue are the ones that are up there. [I also like] Stanford and Duke, along with IU and Purdue, and Wake Forest as well.

On how living in Bloomington affects his decision between Purdue and IU:

It’s an equal opportunity for them, it’s just weighing them out, seeing which one of them is better, a better fit for me, and style of play and stuff like that, whatever’s best for me.

On if he thinks about possibly leaving Bloomington:

Oh yea, definitely. I didn’t expect any of this to happen really. It’s just kind of all of a sudden, but it’s a great opportunity, and I can’t wait to see where I go.

On his grandfather’s ties to IU:

I don’t know if he knows the new coaches here, but he used to coach here at IU with Coach Knight, and he also coached with him at Army, which Coach K was a player there, so that’s how I know both them pretty well. All we talk about is basketball, really, we don’t talk about anything else. He’s a good mentor.

On a timeframe for making a decision:

IU nor Purdue has really forced me to make a decision right away, so I’m just going to go visit both schools and see which one best fits me….I still have time to decide and they want me to make the right decision.

On his position:

Yea, [schools are recruiting me] as a point guard, not a shooting guard, I mean, I’m not the tallest guy in the world.

On factors that are affecting his decision:

Coaching staff, obviously, gotta have a good relationship with them. Location doesn’t really matter to me, just wherever I can play. The style of play is huge for me, being a point guard and seeing how they run, you know. And just, good atmosphere, good coaches, and good education is good, that’s important to me too.

On his preferred style:

I like how we play with Indiana Elite, pushing the ball. But I also grew up playing really fundamental ball, just sets every time, but I prefer running it a little more, but that just fits me best.

On running the point in place of the injured Ray McCallum Jr.:

Yea, Ray is a great combo guard to have out there with me. I usually bring the ball up anyway, because he’s more of a slasher. It’s kind of tough because I have to bring it up every single time, but I don’t mind. We miss Ray, he’s a really good player, and we hope he gets well for Bob Gibbons tournament.

On Indiana Elite One:

We’re playing really well together, the two guys we added, Reggie [King] and Mason [Plumlee], they’re really unselfish, they don’t want to shoot it every time, and they pass it well. They’re just fun to play with, and I think they’re coming in to what we have here.

On if he feels overwhelmed:

It’s a good overwhelmed. I’m not flustered with it or anything like that. It’s exciting, and I’m just going to try to enjoy it as much as I can.
