Maurice Sutton, a 6’11”, 210 lb prospect out of Largo High School in Maryland, has been on Coach Tom Crean’s radar for a long time, and he should be coming to a decision soon. He took some time to talk about IU and the possibility of a commitment following his game against the So Cal All-Stars on Friday at the
Adidas May Classic.
Sutton helped Indiana Elite LNO to a victory tonight in the AMC
On coming back in a 66-58 victory over the So Cal All-Stars:
Yea, we were down, but I think we started getting into it in the second half. I
think we gelled together and got it done. I think we kind of got down in the first half and then we saw they were tired and we just kept running and running.
On an upcoming unofficial visit to IU:
It’s gonna happen I think Monday. My flight leaves actually at 6:00 Monday, so I’ll be taking a visit, and Coach Crean will show me around.
On his first impression:
Yea, I mean, it’s nice. I was looking around when I walked into the gym. I mean, five national championships, you know, that says it all right there. I was walking today, I walked into Subway, and somebody came up to me, and was like, “Are you Maurice Sutton?” I have to admit, that made me happy a little bit...It felt good.
On additional visits:
I’m going to take one more visit to Villanova this week coming up.
On playing in Assembly Hall:
It’s really special. History, history right here. I’m talking the greats, Isaiah Thomas, everybody, just played right here. Gordon, I see him over there, I played with this brother. I can’t say nothing, I’m just happy to be here.
On his knowledge of Indiana basketball:
Five NCAA championships says it all. Coach Knight, Coach Sampson, you know…
On seeing Coach Crean before the AMC:
Oh yea, Coach Crean, he said hi to me. I came to the gym early, and he came in and said hi to me. He said he couldn’t talk to me because you know, NCAA violations today and everything.
On what questions he has for Crean on Monday:
He pretty much explained everything when he came down to see me play at Largo, my high school. He just wanted to show me around campus, you know, see academic advisors and things like that. Just to see what Indiana is all about.
On the commitment of Maurice Creek and if it changes his outlook:
Not at all. Maurice Creek used to be a friend of mine. And Verdell [Jones], I played with Verdell in Kentucky Elite Camp. He’s a good point guard. And Creek, he can go out there and score, he can get it. He’s grabbing up all the guys, we’re going to have a young team. Hopefully we can be a part.
On what factors are affecting his decision:
Well of course I’m looking for academics, in case basketball doesn’t finish what I had to work on. What my degree means, you got to get that piece of paper when it’s all said and done. I just want to, after all the years I play, I want to be a potential pro. I want to be great. There’s not much more to say about that.
On what he might major in:
I was looking at something like business, business management. Other than that, business and probably a minor in communications.
On possible NCAA sanctions:
What you see is what you get. They’re in kind of a pickle right now, if that’s what you want to call it. They’re just trying to get it together, and they’re doing a good job. I can say Coach Crean, coming in, doing the best job that they can. He and his staff, they’re doing the best job they can.
On whether or not he thinks the program can turn around:
Coach Crean is a hell of a coach, a hell of a coach. He can come in and turn it around.
On a possible commitment before he leaves:
It could be a possibility, I never say anything’s impossible. It’s what feels right, you know, I pray on my decision, I pray and I just keep my faith in God, for him to show me the way.
“You look good in red shoes!”
(laughs) Thank you man, thank you.
Let's hope that Sutton chooses Indiana. We need kids like him here at IU!
