Eric Gordon was on the scene at the
Adidas May Classic for Friday night’s games. The freshman phenom had a spectacular year for the Hoosiers, averaging more than 20 points per game and setting a Big Ten record for points scored by a freshman. He was unstoppable early but did see a drop in his shooting percentage and effectiveness after he injured his left wrist midway through the season. He also endured the resignation of head coach Kelvin Sampson.
Gordon was back in Assembly Hall for the AMC
Gordon declared for the NBA draft last April, forgoing his remaining three years of his eligibility at IU, and is
projected to be a top ten pick in the draft. Here’s what he had to say about his wrist, the NBA, and the future of IU basketball.
Are you happy to be done with classes?
Oh yea, I’m happy to be done.
Are you enjoying your time off?
Yea, well not really too much time, I’ve been working out a lot.
What kind of preparations are you making for the NBA?
Well, right now I’m doing a lot of, basically just staying in shape. I’ve just been getting in shape, because the season was over. I’m doing that, and I’m basically getting ready for the testing and the pre-draft camp.
Have you had any individual workouts with teams yet?
No, I’m waiting for that probably around June, that’s when the majority of everyone’s is, but I’ve been doing a lot of NBA workouts.
How’s the wrist feeling?
Yea, my wrist is 100% fine, it was just hurt bad during the season.
Do you think that it affected your performance at all down the line?
Yea, it was basically, I was basically playing with one hand, and it was hard for me to dribble and shoot with it. It adjusted to what I was doing before, so I think I’ll be back to playing as good as I used to.
What are your thoughts on the NBA in general? Are you excited?
Oh yea, I’m really excited. I would say that’s my type of game, and I think I’ll be ready for it.
Do you have any thoughts on Crean and the Hoosier program? Have you been following that?
Oh yea, I mean, I’m a Hoosier, so I’ll always follow it. I still think he’s going to do good down here even though a lot of different things have happened. I think overall he’s going to end up doing fine.
Do you still talk to Sampson a lot? Any word on a possible reunion in the NBA?
I haven’t been talking to him, not for awhile. Now he’s the assistant coach at the Milwaukee Bucks, so I haven’t been getting in contact with him then, but I used to a little bit.
The NBA Draft is scheduled for June 26, 2008.
