IU recruited five new wide receivers for this upcoming season, but that didn’t stop Michigan receiver
Jamonne Chester from believing that he could make a difference for IU in 2009. This past Thursday the 6’2”, 195 lb receiver out of Covenant High School (MI) committed to play for the Hoosiers. IUplanet caught up with him this evening to talk about his commitment.

When we
talked to him last month, IU was large on Chester’s radar but he wasn’t quite ready to make a decision. He did, however, want to make his decision before the start of the football season.
It turns out that he would beat his timetable by a healthy margin, and he sounded relieved to have his school set. “I feel relaxed, a lot of stress is off my shoulders, and I can focus on the season and my grades now,” he said. “I felt that [IU] was the right place because I like the Big Ten and IU runs the spread, it’s not that far from home.”
He’s also very excited about the coaching staff. “The coaches, the coaches bring a lot of energy. It’s just a good atmosphere to be around,” he said.

Chester said that he also liked Central Michigan’s program a lot, but that he had been “leaning toward IU the whole time.” When two of his friends committed to IU, the opportunity to play for the Hoosiers became too good to pass up.
“Two of my friends are going to IU too,
Kenneth Watkins and
Jeremy Gainer. I was conversing a lot [with them]. I’ve met up with them a few times at camps and stuff,” Chester said. Watkins, a safety, and Gainer, a linebacker, both verbally committed to the Hoosiers on the same day (June 28) just over a week ago.
When asked about playing for IU, Chester said, “I’m going to bringing another big, physical receiver” hopefully to make plays, and get to a bowl game.” In a previous interview he described his strengths as “not taking plays off, just coming down with the ball, and running crisp routes.”
As for his final high school year, he is going to be working hard to get himself prepared. He said that he is planning on a lot of individual training over the next year get ready for college.
