Playing at Centennial High School in Roswell Georgia, defensive end
Euclid (pronounced you-klid)
Cummings didn’t expect to get recruited by the Indiana Hoosiers, but he got a nice surprise when IU gave him his first scholarship offer after Coach Bobby Johnson came to one of his practices in the spring. Now the rising senior is hoping to take an official visit to Bloomington before he makes his decision.
Euclid Cummings
Position: Defensive end
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 230 lbs
Hometown: Roswell, Georgia
Rivals.com Rankings: three stars, 41st out of weakside defensive ends
Interested Schools: Indiana, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, UNC, Tennessee, Maryland, NC State, UCF, Middle Tennessee, Georgia, Auburn, Florida
Additional Information: Cummings was offered a scholarship earlier this spring. He said the only time he talked to any of the IU coaching staff was when a coach (he thinks Bobby Johnson) attended one of his practices in the spring, and an offer followed.
Although the contact between Cummings and IU has been scarce and the offer caught him by surprise, Cummings did say that IU was on his radar. “I’m considering IU, I mean, I’m just wide open right now, I’m undecided,” he said.
He hasn’t been to Bloomington before but he hopes to come here sometime this summer. “Hopefully one of my official visits will be to Indiana. I’d like to go up there for an official,” he said. He is also considering South Carolina, Georgia Tech, UNC, and Tennessee strongly at this point.
When asked about factors influencing his decision, he said, “Education, the student life, and the facilities, most definitely the facilities. I kind of want a coach that demands perfection. That’s how my coach is, he demands perfection, and he gets the best out of you. I want a coach that’s going to push me and get the best out of me.” He also added” how successful the football team is going to be.”
As for his play, he said, “my strengths are my aggressiveness and my speed. I feel that I have a motor, and I don’t take plays off, I just keep going. My weakness is my ability to post up a tackle, I need to build up my strength.”
He would like to spend this next year improving his pass rush. “When I go against a quality offensive tackle, I struggle a little bit because I don’t really have a go-to move,” he said.
What he does have is speed, however. Cummings ran a laser-timed 4.57 second 40 yard dash.
He said that he doesn’t have any kind of timetable for making a commitment.
Analysis: At only 230 lbs, Cummings is quite undersized to play defensive end, but he is a good speed rusher. Unless he puts on significant weight, he might be looking at a transition to linebacker. Either way, he would be a good addition because star defensive end Greg Middleton is probably going to be heading to the NFL after next season and fellow starter Jammie Kirlew is nearing graduation.
He is going to have to develop his technique, but he has the pure speed to be a good player. Hopefully the fact that IU has developed some excellent DE prospects plays into his decision.
