Last Saturday the Hoosier football team took a huge step back. The loss against Iowa was one of the worst showings of Indiana football that I have seen in a long time. Coming off a bowl appearance last season and producing some quality NFL players in recent years, the program was thought to be on the rise. But Indiana may be farther away than we originally thought.
Getting stomped at home in every aspect of the game against a struggling Iowa team – a team that was riding a three-game losing streak – and sporting a winless Big Ten record is unacceptable if we truly feel the football program can be something.
The latest loss took the Hoosier record to 2-4 and the schedule isn’t lightening up anytime soon. Indiana could easily go winless the rest of the season and end up an embarrassing 2-10. Illinois is putting together another solid year behind star quarterback Juice Williams, Northwestern is ranked just outside the top 25.
At 4-2, Central Michigan is our only “easy” opponent and has played an already very tough schedule against Georgia and Purdue. That’s not going to be an easy game.
Then comes Wisconsin at home. At 3-3 they look to be having a down year, but then, two of their loses were to Penn State and Ohio State. Then comes Penn State (no chance) and Purdue away (again, very slim).
The players have just not gotten it done. Greg Middleton has gone from a potential first rounder to a guy who is camouflaged in the mix. Last week, our leading rusher was Ben Chappell. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t in the game plan.
Kellen Lewis has not played well and is now being split at QB. The receiving corps are not providing enough targets for the QBs and the defense couldn’t stop my grandma if she was running the ball. That’s a bad combination when you can’t really stop the pass either.
We have a coach who is not capable of running a D1 program, a coach who was fired from Ball State. It’s not his fault that he was placed in this situation, but with him here for the next four years, I worry about our program.
Recruits now bypass Indiana without a second thought. I don’t think we have signed a four or five-star prospect in like 10 years! Don’t hold me to that one…..
We do have some bright spots, don’t get me wrong. Demarlo Belcher is going to be another James Hardy, Starr will be playing on Sundays for sure, and these kind of players will always sprout up.
Bottom line: our Indiana Hoosiers are in trouble. It’s sad- I really felt like the program was on the rise. It may not be too late to turn this around, but the cards are stacked heavily against us.
