IUplanet caught up with 2009 IU commit
Bobby Capobianco today, and as usual the well-spoken power forward provided a very informative update on everything from the NBA Top 100 camp that he recently attended with IU-relevant prospects
Stephan Van Treese and
Roger Franklin to his personal outlook on the near future of IU basketball. Here’s what he had to say:
Capobianco played with Franklin and Van Treese at the Top 100 Camp
On the NBA Top 100 Camp:
I thought I played well. It was the top 100 guys in my class, I felt like there wasn’t anybody who was in a whole other league. I felt like I could play with about anybody there. I thought I did well, I did what my team needed from me…I’m not exactly sure what our record was, we lost in the second game of their little tournament. We had a good squad though.
On Roger Franklin, an IU target and member of Bobby’s team at the camp:
Me and Roger have been friends for awhile now. We played real well together. He’s probably the hardest worker I’ve ever played with before. He’s a good kid, he definitely works hard, and goes after it. I talked to him about [IU] the whole week. I think it’s definitely one of his top schools, for sure. Coach Crean requires a certain type of player to be able to play for him, and I think Roger is definitely one of those guys.
On Stephan Van Treese, a possible IU target and his AAU teammate:
Honestly, me and him, we talk 2 or 3 times a day, we talk all the time. He needs to pick up an offer from IU. Coach Crean needs to see him play this period in July. After that he’ll be able to make his decision. He definitely has a good outlook on it, it’s been a school that’s he’s always wanted to go to since he was little. It was always an option until Coach Crean got here, so I think he’s just working on picking up an offer, and going from there.
On whether or not Crean may offer a scholarship to Van Treese:
I hope so, I really do. Steve’s my best friend, and that’d be awesome to play college ball with him. I think if he plays well, he can definitely fit into the running kind of style that Crean has, so I think it’s a possibility, I think it’s a possibility that he plays for us.
On Crean’s newest commitments, most recently Malik Story:
Those are all guys that I see fitting into Crean’s offense. They’re all good guys. I played against Malik in the Adidas May Classic [in Bloomington] and I don’t really know much about the other guys, [but] I know all the kids in my class.
On his expectations for IU’s program in the near future:
You know, I think honestly, for next year, a .500 record would be something to shoot for. You can win as many games as you lose with that young of a team. But I also think it’ll be something that’s kind of like a snowball gaining momentum, because if it’s just all guys who are willing to fall into his system and who will be there from day one, then I think that will give us the best possibility to do what Coach Crean wants. Next year there’s a chance that it could be rough, but then once my class gets in there and the class after that, I think we should be back to the days that everybody’s used to, with a great record.
On what he’s been working on this summer:
Oh what haven’t I been working on. It’s been explosive things, running faster, jumping higher, just those things that make your game all-around better. I think I’ve added a solid go-to attack off the wing, being able to take one dribble and pull-up, dribble and spin, get to the rack, dribble to the dunk…Just all the types of different moves off the wing, just because with my size and how well I shoot the ball, I think when I get to IU I’m not going to be just in the post. Having that game, definitely with the way coach Crean’s offense is, those are things I’m going to need.
Thanks to Bobby for the great update!
