According to several sources, soon-to-be junior guard Jeremiah Rivers has officially decided to transfer to Indiana from Georgetown and plans to be on the court for Coach Tom Crean and the Hoosiers for the 2009-2010 season. Because of the transfer he is required to sit out for next season before he is eligible for his remaining two years.
Rivers, the son of Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers, is 6’4”, 205 lbs, and he averaged 2.5 points, 2.4 rebounds, and an assist off the bench for the Hoyas last season. He and forward Vernon Macklin both elected to transfer earlier this month, but where Rivers would actually end up was a mystery until very recently.
Although Rivers didn’t put up big numbers offensively, he played the role of defensive stopper for the Hoyas against opposing stars, and his skills earned him a spot on Collegeinsider.com’s All-Defensive team. His biggest game came against Fairfield last season, where he tallied nine points, four rebounds, five assists, and zero turnovers.
Rivers will join a guard-heavy team in 2009 that features eight guards (including Rivers). Assuming that all verbally committed 2009 prospects come to IU and there are no transfers, Rivers will be the 12th scholarship player for the Hoosiers in 2009-2010, which leaves only one scholarship remaining for that season.
