Indiana basketball's scholarship situation: At a glance
Last updated: 5/24/2008
With the flurry of recent signings and commitments, many IU fans are probably wondering how many scholarships we have remaining for 2008, and how many we may (or may not) have available for 2009. Here's a look at our situation for the next couple of years.
When looking at the future years, remember that nothing is definite. Players leaving to transfer to other schools or for other reasons often free up scholarships down the road. Also, some walk-ones may earn scholarships, either full or year-to-year.

Scholarship Players:Kyle Taber (SR)
Devan Dumes (JR)

Looks like we're going to be in a bit of a bind next year. Let's just hope the NCAA doesn't penalize us any more for the recruiting violations of the academic shortcomings..

I'm hoping that if any of our scholarship guards turn out to be flops this year that they'll transfer to free up some space, we sure do have a lot of guards.. If we do get penalized, there go our chances for a big name 09-10 recruit. Also, it looks like Negedu's leaning away from IU, so that gives us room for a prospect to be named later

That would be the best case scenario. i have a feeling that one or two of them might go elsewhere for more playing time.

It's definitely going to be very interesting to see who we decide to use that one remaining scholarship on next year. Do we go for size, skill, or what? Do we give it to the first guy who shows interest in us, or wait for the one we really want? This should be interesting...

I've been really surprised by the Inside the Hall poll, where Franklin is ahead of both SVT and Watford. Watford is a better SF, and SVT is a better PF. Do we take the hybrid? If we take Watford, he immediately starts over Story and Elston. If we take SVT, he battles with Pritchard, Capo and Jobe for the two PF positions. Franklin will fit in as a sort of a 3.5. If his perimeter game hasn't improved drastically, he won't fit in as a 3 in Crean's offense, and he's sort of small to be a legitimate PF. It's interesting that none of them have scholarships offered to them yet, Crean is obviously considering his options very carefully(or he's looking over his shoulder, expecting the NCAA to steal all of 'em). Hopefully none of the players choose other schools before we offer.

I think we're a ways away from any of them choosing schools, at least I hope so. Watford has said that he wasn't going to choose until November, and Franklin until March I believe. This is a really important scholarship so I don't blame Crean for treading lightly. He may even be saving it for a sanction too, who knows.
