Hoosiers make offer to NYC sophomore Tobias Harris
Peegs.com got a lead today that Kelvin Sampson and Indiana University have offered high school sophomore standout Tobias Harris a scholarship to play basketball for the Hoosiers. Harris is a 6'7'' shooting guard at Dix Hills (NY) Half Hollow Hills West high school and has already been getting attention from several schools. The report came after a reporter talked to Terrell Harris, Tobias' father. Terrell told Peegs that Sampson himself made the offer:
I asked Coach Sampson, what do you think about Tobias? Coach says one word. 'Championship'. He says, 'I need Tobias to win a championship. I'm not gonna wait around. I'm offering Tobias Harris a scholarship right now. If you want to accept it, we can do the deal now and get the deal done. If you want to think about, I understand'."
Personally, I'm surprised the Sampson would make an offer so soon, but what do you guys think? Is it better to get a jump on the guy?
Alright, I have no problem starting to follow guys early, but what happens if we give Tobias Harris an offer now and he accepts? It probably means we show him less attention after he commits, he gets unhappy, and then he ends up going elsewhere. Just look at what happened with Eric Gordon going to Illinois and DeShaun Thomas going to Ohio State. They both changed their minds. However, I obviously think you gotta show some interest early on. This kid sounds like a good player and his father said in the Peegs interview that this was the first offer he had from a head coach, which is kind of a big deal. Let's just not let him commit and then change his mind or something.

Alright, I mean, I get your point. But, I also think that showing early interest can be the selling point a lot of the time. This kid, if people don't already know him know, will be very very well known in the near future. Here, check him out:
You watch that video and you tell me we should take back the offer. Haha, I doubt you can do it. A big part of recruiting is early contact, which helps build that relationship.

Well in a lot of cases players will commit and NOT change their minds. If Kelvin is really that impressed with him, you can be sure that he won't neglect him at all. Gordon and Thomas didn't de-commit because they were unhappy with the school, just because other options came up.

Yeah, I agree with that. Bigger and better options came up. I would just hate to have what happened to Illinois happen to us. With the loss of one recruit (Eric Gordon), they went from a top tier team to a nobody. I think we have a better foundation than that, but it still makes me nervous.
I've got to say that I like the idea of guards with height. This kid looks athletic and looks like a scorer. Plus, you can tell he loves the game. Let's just hope that he's not a one-and-done type of player.
Tobias Harris was in a generous mood Monday night.
But it ended once the sophomore came off the bench and scored a school district record 52 points on 16 of 24 shooting to lead Half Hollow Hills West to a 91-72 win over Riverhead in a League VI basketball on senior night. Harris gave his spot in the starting lineup to senior Cory Knox.
In addition to setting the single-game record, Harris also eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau. Harris, who made 19 of 22 free throws, has 1,018 points and leads Hills West (11-0) all-time. John Conneely had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Steven Rollino added a career-high, eight points and six assists in the win. Rob Hughes led Riverhead (5-6) with 25 points.
