With all the recent momentum the IU basketball recruiting machine has gained, the prospect of
adding another big man to an already stellar 2009 class seemed like a sure thing — but quickly dropped off with the commitment of Chris Braswell to Charlotte. All along regarded as a front runner for the 4-star prospect, IU was left in the dust as Braswell committed to the 49ers on Monday, just after his official visit to Bloomington.
So are we done recruiting for the 2009 recruiting class? Unless something changes in the next couple of weeks, it looks like the 2009 class is set. But two guys have still received a lot of attention from the IU staff and still might be in the radar.
Coach Crean has been after Australia born, 3 star prospect, Angus Brandt and it’s looking like we may have an outside shot at him now. His recruitment has skyrocketed after a successful last month in the AAU, and strong showings against already heralded prospects. He has been receiving interest from other Big Ten schools, but also major programs around the country. It looks like IU may be a tough sell for this Aussie.
Dominic Cheek, the 5-star, 16th ranked prospect out of New York also looks like a long shot. Already overloaded with guards, we don’t need to add another, and Cheek has only expressed heavy interest in other schools. He only has one more official visit left, and it’s not certain that he will make a stop in Bloomington.
But let’s not get greedy. We have the third overall recruiting class in the nation – a true big man in Bawa Muniru, a banger inside with a nice outside game as well in Capobianco, a star in the making in Watford, one of the best rising point guards in hometown hero Hulls, and a polished scorer in Creek. We have a solid foundation for years to come. But as Coach Crean has said numerous times, we must be patient.
But you still never know, maybe Coach Crean will add another guy to the class — one of the guys mentioned above, or maybe a guy who we haven’t heard of.
He has surprised me before…
