The Indiana University Athletics Department released its official response to the NCAA's "Failure to Monitor" allegation to the public today. In it, IU refutes claims that it failed to monitor former coach Kelvin Sampson and his recruiting practices while with the school's men's basketball team.
“We have submitted our response as instructed by the NCAA,” said Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan in a press release. "President McRobbie has consistently stated his strong belief that the IU athletic department met or exceeded standards in the area of monitoring, and we hope for a successful adjudication of this allegation."
Fans have been waiting for the university's response to the allegations since June 19. The released documents, in their entirety, are available here:
The documents make two things clear. The first is that the NCAA Infractions Committee strongly believes that IU could have and should have done more to monitor itself. The second is that IU believes that it did everything in its power to prevent the violations from happening.
"Practically speaking, the fallout from this self-reported infractions case has been a devastating sanction in and of itself," reads the text near the end of IU's response. Later, continuing that same argument the university claims that "the fact that there is only one returning scholarship student-athlete on the team literally means the current head coach and his staff are rebuilding a program from square one."
The NCAA's possible response seems up in the air at this point. Perhaps the best that Hoosier fans can hope for is a quick response--at least then uncertainty won't loom over the team for much of this season.
