Bawa Muniru commits to IU, takes Crean's final scholarship for 2009 class

Coach Tom Crean has been under the magnifying glass every waking minute during his first few months as men’s basketball coach at IU. But last night, if Hoosiers were to listen ever so closely, they might have heard a hard-earned sigh of relief from somewhere in Bloomington.

6-foot-11 Bawa Muniru of Birmington, Alabama committed to IU last night, closing up any spots in the 2009 recruiting class. The 255-pound center prospect fills any voids concerning height for next year’s young team and serves as a solid pick.

Muniru’s commitment is great news for IU basketball, but it also symbolizes Crean’s unparalleled devotion to this program. In his first several months as head coach, he has quickly developed relationships with prospects and closed deals using aggressive (but legal) methods, such as bringing along IU legend Isaiah Thomas during visits to bolster his swag.

The Ghana native also had offers on the table from Louisville, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Alabama-Birmingham and Auburn. Academic records from his school, Charis Prep in Wilson, North Carolina, have not been cleared by the NCAA and thus his eligibility as a freshman remains unconfirmed. He played the remainder of his senior year at Madison Academy in Huntsville, Alabama.

Closing out the 2009 squad, Muniru will now join Christian Watford, Bobby Capobianco, Derek Elston, Jordan Hulls and Maurice Creek to make for a fantastic lineup.

People have been calling Muniru a "raw" talent, but even though he hasn't been playing basketball that long, the big man knows how to finish. Here's some proof:

Muniru

How tall is Muniri. Iv`e seen 6`9'' and 7`. Does anyone know. A big difference in the Big 11. I think we would take a 7 footer even if he is a little bit of a project. Not sure about a 6`9" guy. I am concerned about schollies. I always hate to see a player leave for any reason.

it's 6'11'' according to rivals- i'd change that dave

agreed about the schollies, b-dub. if it were to be someone like rivers as people have been insinuating, i'm not sure the hit is worth it. though the height is MUCH needed

What I've been seeing about the scholarship situation isn't that anyone is going to leave--it's that someone would possibly give up a scholarship, making them a "walk-on". The person I've seen this being suggested about is Jeremiah Rivers, the point guard who transferred from Georgetown last season.

I see this being a major possibility, since Rivers' dad is former NBA player and current Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers. Of course, this is only speculation, but it seems like it could be a possibility. Only time will tell, though.

I would think Doc Rivers could afford to pay. And J. Rivers could live better than most students on campus.

Finally some "true" big men on campus!!! IU has lacked that for a couple years.

Yeah, I kinda wish he would give up his scholarship so we could sign another stud.....

I have heard walk on kids who were granted scholarships have done this but nobody with the talent of Rivers...

Anywho, we are gonna have a stacked team next year!! Can't wait!!

I also have seen that Muniru was ranked as high as #10 in the rankings his freshman but just stayed the same.

Don't know what to think of that...
