Vincennes University head coach Everick Sullivan has been around basketball for a long time. He was a Parade All-American out of high school then spent four years at playing at Louisville under head coach Denny Crum. He has been a college coach for four years and just finished his third season as the head coach at Vincennes University. This past season, Sullivan led the Trailblazers to a 28-6 record.
Vincennes coach Everick Sullivan is confident that Devan Dumes will succeed as a Hoosier.
That team’s leading scorer, Devan Dumes, committed to play for IU next season on Saturday. Sullivan had great things to say about Dumes when IUplanet talked to him Monday.
“Devan is a very good person and basketball player,” Sullivan said. “He gave us leadership and experience as a transfer. He played big minutes and always produced on a consistent basis.”
While Dumes was a star player for the Blazers, he stressed the fact that Dumes is a good teammate.
“His teammates loved him and the coaching staff enjoyed coaching him,” Sullivan said.
For the past year, Sullivan got to see Dumes play first-hand, giving him a great opportunity to analyze his game.
“He is a combo guard that can shoot the three ball and he can use his dribble and college body to get to the rim,” Sullivan said. “He is a great free throw shooter and is very good in the clutch.”
But Sullivan was quick to highlight the fact that Dumes can play on both sides of the floor.
“The most important characteristic about his game is that he can really defend on the perimeter,” Sullivan said. “He's on the ball and off the ball principles are fundamentally sound.”
Many IU basketball fans had never heard Dumes’ name among those being pursued to play at Indiana, but Coach Tom Crean had taken an interest in him and in less than three weeks, got Devan to commit.
But some from the Indiana basketball circle already knew Dumes. He played at Decatur Central High School, where he was a standout player. In his junior and senior seasons, he was named to the All-Marion County team as a junior and senior, joining the likes of Greg Oden and Mike Conley in 2006 and Eric Gordon in 2007. Of course, most basketball fans have heard of the other players, but Dumes was overlooked coming out of high school.
“He didn’t play AAU ball, so he really wasn’t on the radar,” Sullivan said. “He had a very small list of schools out of high school that were interested in him. It’s almost like he got re-recruited when came to Vincennes.”
Now after one season at Eastern Michigan University and one at Vincennes University, Sullivan is confident hat Dumes is ready to play at IU.
“He is college ready on and off the court and should have a bright future for Coach Crean and the Indiana Hoosiers.”
