In 1929, two sociologists published a groundbreaking study of a small American city and how its citizens were responding to 20th-century modernization. They chose Muncie, Ind., as their representative city, and their book quickly became a national bestseller. The book was titled Middletown: A Study in Modern American Culture. The fascination with Middletown as a typical American community has persisted, with the result that Muncie is the most thoroughly studied community of its size in the nation.
