The DMX concert at Lambda Chi Alpha was hyped as the biggest concert of Little 500 week. Unfortunately for the fraternity and fans that attended the show, the party was cut short because of a noise ordinance violation.
The Indiana Daily Student reported today that a riot broke out at the concert, causing leading police to mace “students in the front row and an Indiana Daily Student photographer.”
Still, however, it is unclear what truly happened.
Comments on the IDS website suggest that Sarah Brubeck, the reporter covering the story, may have gotten some facts wrong. Brubeck wrote that though the concert was scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m., “it was delayed until 9:30 p.m. because of difficulties getting DMX to the house on time.” Brubeck then reported that the show was shut down at 10 p.m. Other students on the site seem to have a difference of opinion.
“DMX came on stage @ 10pm! We moved into the streets at about 10:15 or so. This entire article is missing a lot of pieces,” writes one user.
Regardless of the facts, here’s what we do know—patrons paid $25 to see DMX perform live. He was contracted to perform for at least 45 minutes. He didn’t. So what happens next?
It seems a no-brainer that fans should get a refund.
Fans didn’t get what they paid for, it’s just that simple. Anywhere else that hosted the concert would give a refund. Shouldn’t fraternities be held to that same standard?
Greek houses hosting concerts have a history of planning problems.
Last year, Alpha Epsilon Pi’s Three 6 Mafia concert was shut down early by police for a noise ordinance violation as well. How much planning does it take to figure out that if the concert is not over by 10 p.m., IUPD will show up?
Essentially what I’m saying is that, regardless of what DMX did, Lamba Chi Alpha is ultimately to blame. They were the promoters of the show, and as such, responsible for doing everything in their ability to give ticket holders a good show.
